Sefer Mishlei (Proverbs)

The wisdom of Shlomo HaMelech — timeless teachings on character, relationships, and the pursuit of true wisdom.

About Sefer Mishlei

Sefer Mishlei — the Book of Proverbs — is one of the three books of Kesuvim (Writings) attributed to Shlomo HaMelech, the wisest of all men. Its 31 chapters contain a treasury of practical and spiritual wisdom, addressing every dimension of human life: family, friendship, speech, work, character, and the fear of God.

The sefer opens with the declaration 'Mishlei Shlomo ben Dovid melech Yisrael — lada'as chochma u'musar' — 'The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel — to know wisdom and discipline.' This sets the tone for the entire work: Mishlei is not merely a collection of wise sayings, but a systematic guide to developing the character and wisdom of a Torah Jew.

The Vilna Gaon, the Malbim, and many other great commentators devoted major works to Mishlei, recognizing its depth and its centrality to Jewish ethical and spiritual life. Rabbi Bechhofer's shiurim on Mishlei bring these classical commentaries to life, illuminating the relevance of Shlomo's wisdom for contemporary Jewish living.
